World Biodiversity Forum Sessions
Date : 14-19 June 2026
Location: Davos, Switzerland
Language: English

Join the sessions (co-)chaired by BAMBOO members Francesca Verones, Laura Scherer, Stephan Pfister, and Alexandra Marques:

- IND7 — Quantifying Biodiversity Impacts of Global Production, Trade, and Consumption
- FIN4 — Biodiversity footprints for companies – metrics, challenges, and opportunities

Biodiversity loss is accelerating — and our global production, trade, and consumption patterns are key drivers. The Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework recognizes this with:

- Target 15: Company disclosure of biodiversity impacts
- Target 16: Empowering sustainable consumption choices

To deliver on these targets, we need robust tools to quantify biodiversity impacts along value chains — from raw materials to end products.

We welcome contributions from across the spectrum — scientists, businesses, policymakers, and practitioners — who are advancing how we measure and manage biodiversity in the global economy.

BAMBOO Final Conference
Date : 4–5 June 2026
Location: Brussels, Belgium
Language: English, Swahili

Join us in Brussels for the culmination of the BAMBOO project, where we will present key outcomes from both BAMBOO and sister projects advancing how biodiversity impacts of global biomass trade are assessed and understood.

The BAMBOO Final Conference will offer an opportunity to reflect on the project’s contributions toward understanding the biodiversity consequences of global biomass flows and to explore how these results can support science-based targets, the SDGs, and better environmental decision-making. Further details will be released soon.

Transformative Change Cluster: RAINFOREST/CLEVER Final Conference
Date : 4–5 June 2025
Location: Brussels, Belgium
Language: English

During World Environment Day, 11 EU Horizon research projects from the Transformative Change Cluster came together in Brussels to address a central question: How can we better mainstream biodiversity into policymaking?

Over two days, participants explored a broad set of themes, including:

- Measuring biodiversity impacts
- Spatial planning and scenario modeling
- Equity, justice, and governance
- Policy coherence and the science–policy interface

Panel discussions focused on:

- The EU Green Deal and its biodiversity dimension
- The role of science in shaping effective policy
- Bridging sectors to find common ground
- The EU’s global footprint and international trade
- Biodiversity credits and pathways to scaling voluntary commitments
- Learning from global examples and strengthening what already works
The workshop was especially meaningful thanks to rich exchanges among researchers and thought leaders, opportunities to share work on environmental governance, and collaborative discussions with colleagues from CLEVER and RAINFOREST. The dynamic environment encouraged new ideas and future partnerships, all within a welcoming space that fostered excellent conversations.

Pint of Science Netherlands: All Things Sustainability - A night with BAMBOO
Date : Wednesday, 21 May 2025
Location: Café De Vergulde Kruik, Haarlemmerstraat 22, 2312 GA Leiden, The Netherlands
Language: English

Team members involved: Liam Vezzani, Carlijn Bos, Jennifer Anderson, and Laura Scherer.

Team members involved: Liam Vezzani, Carlijn Bos, Jennifer Anderson, and Laura Scherer The BAMBOO project joined a well-established dissemination event in the Netherlands, the Pint of Science, which brings scientific research to the public in an accessible way. The event took place after work in a pub in Leiden, with participation from four of our colleagues. After a general introduction of the scope of the project, three presentations on ecosystem services, functional diversity and global scenarios took place, with space for interaction and questions from the public. BAMBOO Tanzania Stakeholder Workshop
Date : 6 December 2024
Location: Morogoro, Tanzania
Language: English, Swahili

The first BAMBOO stakeholder workshop in Tanzania marked the beginning of the project’s cotton case study. Cotton is a key export commodity with substantial economic importance for local communities, yet it also presents significant environmental challenges.

In partnership with Sokoine University of Agriculture, the project team engaged farmers, researchers, industry representatives, and government specialists to gather early insights. The workshop introduced the BAMBOO project, invited perspectives from across the value chain, and initiated discussions that will help assess the trade-offs between economic value and ecological impacts in Tanzanian cotton production.

DF 87 - "Biodiversity in LCA: how far have we come ?
Date : Tuesday, 3 September 2024
Location: ETH Zentrum campus, Alumni Pavillon (GEP) and online (the event will be held on-site in a hybrid format)
Language: English

Join the event hosted by BAMBOO members Francesca Verones, Laura Scherer, Stephan Pfister, and Martin Bruckner.

14 years after the first discussion forum on biodiversity, we take stock of the current state of the art in assessing biodiversity in LCA and discuss the way forward. We aim to address the breadth of biodiversity impacts, needs for inventories, and ongoing work related to transformative pathways by presenting and discussing snapshots of work from a range of scientists and practitioners.

Scenario workshop with stakeholders
Date : Monday, 10 June 2024
Location: Online – Zoom
Language: English

Stakeholders in the public, civic, and private sectors joined us for an online workshop on the scenarios that are being developed by the BAMBOO project. The scenarios aim to help us understand the biodiversity implications of production and consumption of non-food biomass. During the workshop, we presented our initial ideas for these scenarios. Subsequently, the participants provided their perspectives and ideas on how to improve the scenarios and make them as plausible and societally relevant as possible. The collected feedback will help us refine the scenarios to better address the connection between society and biodiversity..

Pint of Science Trondheim: From lakes to kitchen cupboards: unraveling-nature's-mysteries
Date : 7 May 2024
Location: Øx Taproom, Trondheim, Norway
Language: English

Team members involved: Elisha Wilson.

BAMBOO PhD candidate Elisha Wilson joined Pint of Science Norway to present some of his research in BAMBOO so far. Elisha focused specifically on his work involving the biodiversity impacts of stimulant products. He walked attendees through supply chains of coffee, tea, and chocolate, from regions of production in the tropics to our own kitchen cupboards here in Norway. Zooming out a bit, he then explained a bit about the BAMBOO project as a whole, and how our research can contribute to decision making at the national scale, in a corporate context, and in the choices that consumers make in their day-to-day lives. Audience questions followed, sparking lively discussions around consumer choice and the value of biodiversity in our everyday lives. For more information, visit..

Framing workshops with retail partners
Date : 18 and 22 January 2024
Location: Online – Teams
Language: English

Stakeholders from one large global retail partner were invited for an online workshop that had as an aim to frame the case study, introduce BAMBOO’s approach, and discuss next steps for data collection and supply chain biodiversity impact assessment.
